UN Fails to Protect Refugees from Massacre

​Ivory Coast Conflict
Christians in the Ivory Coast are outraged that United Nations Peacekeepers failed to protect Christian refugees in a UNHCR refugee camp from a violent attack by Muslim radicals. Violence between the Muslim North and Christian South in Ivory Coast erupted after the December 2010 elections.

​Bullets Not Ballots
The Muslim candidate, Alassane Ouattara, set to declare himself the winner, despite the Constitutional Council declaring the Christian candidate, Laurent Gbagbo, the winner of the elections. Alassane Ouattara's Muslim rebels then moved to sieze power by force. In this they were supported by France.

Muslims Massacre Christians
In March 2011, Muslim rebels supporting Ouattara massacred many hundreds of Christian Guere tribesman. Tens-of-thousands of Guere Christians lost their homes and were displaced. Thousands of these refugees settled in Nahivly Camp, supposedly guarded by UN Peacekeepers.

Christian Refugees Targeted
On 20 July 2012, a mob of Malinke Muslims, armed with machetes, clubs and assault rifles attacked the Christian Guere, murdering many, dousing the camp in petrol and setting it on fire. Reportedly the UN failed to fire on the attackers and provided no protection for the terrified refugees.

When Peacekeepers Fail to Protect
When the UN Peacekeeping force was asked why they did not fire upon the attackers, they responded that they wanted to avoid "a massacre"! Christian survivors of the attack said that the UN failure to protect them enabled a massacre of Christians at the hands of their Muslim assailants.

Devastation
Christian survivors of the attack reported being chased away by the UN Peacekeepers whom they pleaded for protection. In many cases, Christians were literally pushed into the arms of their attackers who mercilessly beat them in front of the UN Peacekeepers. Thousands of the Guere refugees fled into the bush and the refugee camp was burned to the ground by the Muslim attackers.
