Greetings in the precious Name of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
Thank you for your letter and for your question as to why we believe Jesus went to hell.
The Apostles Creed states: "I believe in God the Father Almighty… and in Jesus Christ, His only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, He died and was buried. He descended into Hell. The third day He rose again from the dead…"
The wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23). Christ died for us. The just in place of the unjust (1 Peter 3:18).
"Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law by becoming a curse for us". Galatians 3:13
"He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins…" 1 John 2:2
"Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it." Colossians 2:15
Hell is real and Christ has redeemed us from it by suffering its torments, defeating death, hell, satan and the grave. Rising triumphant and freeing many captives, bringing them in a victory procession with Him.
"For Christ also suffered once for sinners, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but made alive by the Spirit, by whom He also went and preached to the spirits in prison, who were formerly disobedient, when once the Divine longsuffering waited in the days of Noah, while the Ark was being prepared…" 1 Peter 3:18-22
Yours for the fulfilment of the Great Commission
