HOW DOES ONE BIBLICALLY RESPOND TO IRRATIONAL AND COUNTER-PRODUCTIVE RULES OF GOVERNMENTS IN THE NAME OF FIGHTING A VIRUS! E.g. YOU MAY GO TO A RESTAURANT WITH A FAMILY MEMBER, BUT YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO VISIT AT THE HOME?
This has to be the most monumental overreaction to a virus in the history of medicine!
3.5 Billion people on some form of Lockdown!
For something that is not much different from the seasonal flu. In the light of the vastly greater numbers of people dying from tuberculosis, cancer, car accidents and crime, if only our government would put the energy they have placed into fighting COVID-19, into fighting crime, violence, corruption, farm murders, deforestation, litter, pollution and the list could go on!
The Biblical principle is: Render to Caesar the things that are Caesars and to God the things that are God’s. To illustrate this, our Lord produced a coin. Whose face and image is on here? Caesar’s!
Then render unto Caesar the things that are Caesars (i.e. the coin) and to God the things that are God’s!
To Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor, our Lord Jesus Christ declared: You would have no authority over Me, unless it had been given to you from above. Biblically, it is clear that all authority is limited authority, delegated authority and answerable authority.
This was the principle of the Reformers: Lex Rex. The Law is king.
Romans 13 makes it clear that civil authorities are to be ministers of justice under God. All authority is delegated authority and is accountable to God. Civil government is to be a terror to evil, a minister of Justice, executing wrath on those who practise evil. Civil government is not to be a terror to those who do good, but is to protect the law-abiding.
God does not give a blank cheque to anyone. Least of all to civil governments. Just as the Bible is full of warnings against those who are false teachers, false shepherds and false prophets, the Old Testament is full of God’s evaluation of rulers who were evil, who did evil in the sight of the Lord. In fact, the vast majority of kings in the Old Testament were denounced as evil in the sight of God.
How Christians in recent years have come to ignore the vast teachings in the Bible on the depravity of man, warnings against do not be deceived and against false ministers, to unquestioning, irrational, unconditional, blind obedience to civil government, is incredible. Many governments today look far more like the beast of Revelation 13, than of the Minister of Justice of Romans 13.
Richard Wurmbrand, Brother Andrew and Francis Schafer have written extensively on what extent must we obey civil government.
Where there is a conflict, we must obey God, rather than man. Hence, Bible smuggling, underground mission work in Restricted Access Areas, etc. is permitted and in fact, essential.
We should do what we can to avoid unnecessary trouble and conflict. However, the High Court in South Africa has already ruled the Lockdown regulations of the South African government to be unconstitutional and illegal.
Therefore, we should use common sense and be as responsible as we can, but there is no point in trying to slavishly follow rules that make no sense medically and which violate our Bill of Rights: Freedom of movement, freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom of conscience, freedom of religion, free enterprise, freedom of association and all the other freedoms guaranteed by the Bill of Rights.
