I DISAGREE WITH YOUR BOOK THE CHRISTIAN AT WAR. I HAVE NOT READ IT BUT CHRISTIANS CAN NEVER BE INVOLVED IN ARMIES, WAR OR USING WEAPONS. WE ARE CALLED TO PEACE AND LOVE. YOU ARE JUST SUPPORTING AMERICA’S WARS OF AGGRESSION.
Greetings in the precious Name of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
Thank you for your letter.
Of course it is our greatest concern to know God and to make Him known. To love God with all of our heart, soul, mind and strength. To not be conformed to this world, but to be transformed by the renewing of our mind. Christ’s Great Commission is our supreme ambition.
This Great Commission commands us to make disciples of all nations, teaching obedience to all things that the Lord has commanded.
God’s Word does require us to protect our families (Nehemiah 4:14; Exodus 22:2; 1 Timothy 5:8-9).
The God of the Old Testament is the same as the God of the New Testament. Yesterday, today and forever Jesus Christ is the same. God never changes. The Law of God reflects the unchanging character of Almighty God. God is not a pacifist. The Bible is not a pacifist document. Pacifism has a false idea of man, it does not understand the depravity of man. Pacifism also has a false idea of God, it does not understand the justice and wrath of God.
Jesus Christ is not a pacifist. This shall be most evident on His Return (Revelation 14:19-20).
“With justice He judges and makes war …He will rule them with an iron sceptre. He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty… King of kings and Lord of lords.” Revelation 19:11-16
Of course love can never be replaced by force. We have never suggested that. All we are trying to say is what we plainly see taught in the Scriptures. I love God, I love my family, I love my brethren in Christ, I love my neighbours, and I have also demonstrated much love for my enemies. I have taken the Gospel to communist terrorists, showing the Jesus film and preaching the Gospel even in communist terrorist camps. I have proclaimed the Gospel in prisons, even to terrorists who have attacked our churches. I have, on over 100 occasions, gone behind enemy lines into communist countries, war zones and Muslim nations to smuggle in Bibles, establish Bible study groups and evangelise people, who, in the human sense, would be considered my enemies.
And of course, even to those who are my personal enemies. I have sought to exercise forgiveness, mercy, grace and most importantly presenting the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ to them.
Do not assume that we support American military policy. We are not blind to the negative impacts of much of American foreign policy, particularly in the Middle East where their support for Muslim regimes has led to greater persecution of Christians in these areas.
I'm well aware of the abuse of politics and the most unjust wars which have been waged, particularly in Europe in the First and Second World Wars. The bombing of cities, total war against civilian populations. These are, of course, completely unjustifiable and unBiblical.
However, although my mother grew up being bombed in Berlin, and my father was involved in the 8 th Army in North Africa, and many of my uncles and grandparents were involved on the Eastern front, in the Africa Korp, in the Kriegsmarine and the Luftwaffe, my experience has been quite different. I was brought up in Rhodesia where all of us, even farmers and school children, were targeted by communist terrorists. There was no alternative, except to be armed and ready to defend life and family at a moments notice.
As a young soldier and missionary I had the opportunity of saving lives, protecting the weak and defenceless from the cruel and merciless.
We have also seen Christian freedom fighters in Sudan fighting against Muslim Jihad to protect their villages from annihilation.
Studying the Scriptures, praying the Psalms and understanding world history, confirms to me what Augustine taught concerning a Just War. I attach an article I wrote on the subject of Warfare and the Word.
May the Lord continue to bless, guide and strengthen you, and to lead you into all Truth.
Yours for Faith and freedom
