Volume 2 - 1994 The March 21 edition of ‘Time’ magazine contained an article on the overthrow of Bophuthatswana entitled “Apartheid Apocalypse”. As an example of media manipulation and inaccurate reporting the article is more typical of an ANC propaganda pamphlet than of a news report. The writer reveals his political prejudices in the first sentence describing Bophuthatswana as “a black homeland.. .created by the South African engineers of Apartheid. “Bophuthatswana was an independent nation and the Tswana nation was hardly the creation of anyone. Even the British (who had annexed the then Bechuanaland) recognised the reality of the Tswana nation and granted independence to Botswana in 1960. However, when South Africa granted independence to the rest of the Tswanas in 1977 this was decried as “apartheid”! Bop. is then referred to as “a remnant of apartheid”. How does a multi-racial nation like Bop. - where no segregation or discrimination has existed - suddenly become “a remnant of apartheid”?
If the Tswana can be denigrated as a “tribal homeland” does this mean that “Time” regards the Kingdoms of Swaziland and Lesotho as unworthy of independence and nationhood? After all the Swazi’s, Sotho’s and Tswana’s are each homogeneous nations who used to be British protectorates. Are the Dutch, Danes, Norwegians or Swedes “tribal homelands” because their nation shares a common language and culture? The article refers to Bop. as a “remote domain”. Remote to whom? It’s less than an hour’s drive from Pretoria. It is hardly “remote” to those who live there. The article also inexplicably refers to deposed President Lucas Mangope as “a dictator”. That is simply not true. In fact Bophuthatswana was one of the very few multi-party democracies in Africa. President Mangope had been elected in free and fair elections. Elections incidently which had been boycotted by the ANC! The article then inaccurately attributes the demonstrations, riots and arson to “residents”. In fact 60 000 ANC supporters were bussed into Bophuthatswana. This rent-a-mob can hardly be described as “residents”. The Afrikaners who had rushed to aid the people of Bophuthatswana were then denigrated as “neo-Nazi” and “extremists” expecting to fight “a racial war”. Such a sloppy and inaccurate use of language does “Time” little credit. What is so extreme about seeking to help their neighbours? And what is so racial about white farmers seeking to protect the lives and property of blacks from external aggression? “Time” gives the false impression that the SA army moved into Bophuthatswana in order to restore law and order. In fact the much slandered Afrikaner Volksfront (AVF) volunteers under Gen. Viljoen stopped the looting and arson spree. They then handed over to the SADF. The “Time” article also slanders the Freedom Alliance as “an attempt to preserve some of the privileges of Apartheid.” That is not true. The Freedom Alliance is a multi-racial alliance - mainly of Zulu’s and Afrikaners - who are attempting to remain free from the marxist madness that has devastated Mozambique, Angola, Ethiopia and Eastern Europe. BOPHUTHATSWANA AND CISKEI OVERTHROWNThe past momentous weeks have been filled with turbulence, terrorism, tragedy and treachery. Our Christian friends in Bophuthatswana and Ciskei have undergone traumatic communist revolutions. The Christian people of KwaZulu are at this moment engaged in a life and death struggle to preserve their freedom. Those people who so presumptuously and prematurely proclaimed the death of communism must now revise their conclusion. Two sovereign nations - Bophuthatswana and Ciskei - have just joined the long list of casualties of communism. And the strategic South West African sea port of Walvis Bay - without so much as a referendum - has been handed over to the Marxist SWAPO government of Namibia. Moreover, South Africa - the superpower of Africa, the most important country for strategic minerals in the world - is in the death- throes of a communist takeover. Anyone who is so naive as to believe that communism is dead obviously hasn’t noticed the Billions of Rands of damage caused by marxist mobs looting and burning shops, factories, homes and cars in South Africa. Those who have been gullible enough to believe that the issue in South Africa is racial - and not religious and ideological - cannot have seen that most of the victims of ANC terrorism have been Black Christians. Bophuthatswana was a model of free enterprise and prosperity - yet it was ruthlessly targeted for destruction and 60 000 ANC thugs and terrorists were bussed into the peaceful democracy to riot, loot and terrorise the Tswana nation into submission. Ciskei was a black nation with the most impressive Christian pro-life and anti- pornography laws. Yet it too was targeted for relentless subversion and its Christian leadership was overthrown. Now the Christians in the Kingdom of Zululand are under attack. As South Africa gears up for the most violent election in history, ANC mobs have launched a murder spree against their opponents and massive intimidation against voters. The ‘most recent atrocity was the massacre of Zulus as they peacefully assembled for a Royal Rally in Johannesburg. Without any warning ANC snipers fired indiscriminately into the Zulu crowd. Amidst the current crisis, Frontline Fellowship is continuing to assist the persecuted churches, evangelise in the war torn areas, provide chaplaincy ministries to the various fighting forces and invest in Leadership Training. Despite the avalanche of bad news there is still much good news for us to rejoice in. The anti-communist forces of UNITA in Angola have survived the communist bombardments and offensives. UNITA now effectively controls over 80% of Angola. The anti-communist RENAMO army ‘has successfully forced the communist Frelimo regime to accede to the first multi-party elections in Mozambique’s history which are scheduled for later this year. In Zambia a Biblical reformation continues to transform that country from communist chaos into a Christian republic. Even in strife torn KwaZulu, God is continuing to pour out revival blessings on the Zulu people. The Revival in Zululand has continued since 1966. These are momentous days in Africa’s history and events are likely to take many more unpredictable turns over the next months. We need your ongoing support and earnest intercession so that Frontline Fellowship may continue to assist the suffering Christians, evangelise in the war zones and continue to work for reformation and revival even in the midst of tribulation. The needs have never been greater and our opportunities for service are limitless. Please do not write off the Kingdom of Zululand or South Africa! The war is far from over. As Jonathan said to his armour-bearer before attacking the invading Philistines: “Come, let’s go over to the outpost of those uncircumcised fellows. Perhaps the Lord will act in our behalf. Nothing can hinder the Lord from saving, whether by many or by few.” 1 Samuel 14:6 LEARNING FROM HISTORYThe destabilization and invasions of Bophuthatswana and Ciskei were classical examples of Communist and Nazi strategy. In 1938 Hitler’s sympathisers created civil disturbances in the Sudetenland areas of Czechoslavakia. These disturbances were then used as justification for the German army to invade Czechoslovakia “to protect the safety of its citizens”. The Soviets used the same strategy to seize control over the nations of Eastern Europe. ANC affiliated trade unions organised strikes by hospital workers - first in Venda, then in Lebowa and Gazankulu, and then in Bophuthatswana. These strikes then spread to teachers and postal and telecommunications workers. Their demands varied and then changed to demand the immediate pay-out of their pensions. The ANC played on the fears of civil servants by threatening that they would lose their jobs and their pensions unless their governments were reincorporated into South Africa. The strikes degenerated into riots and burning tyres and barricades soon filled the streets. Homes of policemen were attacked. Many were murdered. Blatant terrorism destabilised the countries until the situation deteriorated to anarchy. According to Professor Hercules Booysen, one of South Africa’s foremost constitutional law experts, “The South African government acted like thugs, especially since it now appears that South Africa allowed Bophuthatswana to be destabillsed and maybe even played an active role in this.” The government has been party to an illegal revolutionary act of violence which could be classified as an annexation of that country. (Roca Report, March 94). The revolutionary formula was then applied to Ciskei. “CISKEI HAS BEEN BETRAYED”In a personal interview by phone the deposed leader of the Republic of Ciskei, Brigadier Joshua Gqozo told me that “Ciskei has been betrayed.” Brigadier Gqozo said that the Republic of Ciskei had been subjected to a classical communist revolution. However, while he expected nothing less from the murderous marxists of the ANC - what had shocked him was that the SA government and SA army had been used to overthrow the sovereignty of the Ciskei nation. Brig. Gqozo expressed his amazement that the once honourable SA Defence Force could have sunk so low as to allow itself to be used as mere mercenaries for the marxists. That the SA ambassador could have abused Ciskei’s hospitality to take the role of a colonial ruler was also shameful. The SA Ambassador, Piet Goosen, along with the South African Council of Churches regional leader, Rev. Bongani Finca, have been designated “co-administrators” of Ciskei by the Transitional Executive Council. The TEC is an unelected body predominantly composed of ANC and Communist Party appointees. Brig Gqozo challenged South Africans and Ciskeians to carefully observe how treacherously the communists work. “See now and be warned. What the ANC is now doing to destroy the constitution and sovereignty of Ciskei is a micro example of what they intend to do to the whole of South Africa. We must learn now how the marxists work and be sure to vote against their plans.” Ciskei had no sooner fallen when the ANC and SA government turned their attention - and the by now familiar revolutionary formula on KwaZulu. But they were to find the Zulus a far more resilient and resistant target. INFILTRATION AND SUBVERSIONSouth Africans have reeled from the shock of seeing two Christian neighbours - Bophuthatswana and Ciskei - fall to Marxist revolutions and a third - KwaZulu - besieged. Yet for 12 years Frontline Fellowship has been warning of the communist threat. In lectures to the South African Defence Force, the Bophuthatswana Defence Force, the Ciskei Defence Force and the Zulu 121 Bn, I repeatedly outlined the Marxist strategy that has been used to infiltrate and subvert over 40 nations. Yet few seem to have taken the Marxist threat seriously. In order to obtain control over a nation, there are five essential areas of infiltration: The educational institutions, the entertainment industry, the news media, the religious institutions and the political institutions. One has to grant it to them - the ANC and their allies have very thoroughly and effectively infiltrated and subverted a high percentage of each of these fields. Even more seriously one has to also acknowledge that for all intents and purposes most of the Christian church has let them. It’s not that the Marxists hijacked these areas from the Church. The churches have generally given these areas away’ Many pastors even go so far as to teach that Christians should not get involved in political issues. How often have you come across Christians who are following a call to be a journalist or a judge or a politician or a film producer? In the Great Commission the Lord commands us to “Go into all the world” (Mark 16:15).This involves not only going into all the geographic world but also the world of business and sports and the arts and the media... The Lord taught us to pray “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your Name, Your Kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven... - We cannot pray “hallowed be Your Name...” if we allow blasphemous films to permeate our entertainment industry. We cannot pray “Your will be done on earth...” if we do nothing to see that God’s will is done - in education, in economics, in every area of life. This is what the Great Commission involves: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given unto me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations.., teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” Matthew 28:18-20 We are not called to make converts but disciples. Not just disciples of individuals - but of nations. All nations! This involves teaching obedience to everything that the Lord has commanded - including for education, entertainment, news reporting and political institutions. What the marxists have done for evil purposes, Christians need to do for the advancement of the Kingdom of God. Where they infiltrated, we need to work as salt and light. Where they worked for subversion and revolution, we need to labour for evangelism and reformation. Where they have gone to destroy our nation, we need to go to disciple our nation. “In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of His appearing and His Kingdom, I give you this charge: Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage - with great patience and careful instruction. For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine, Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.... I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." - 2 Timothy 4:1-5,7
