His Most Important and Exciting Journey
Andrew van der Bijl, known throughout the world as Brother Andrew, God's Smuggler, passed into eternity on Tuesday, 27 September 2022, at age 94. This will certainly be his most important and exciting journey.  Brother Andrew was a Dutch Christian missionary who dedicated his life to smuggling Bibles to persecuted Christians, behind the Iron Curtain, in communist Eastern Europe. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, he refocused his energies on serving persecuted Christians in the Muslim Middle East. As Andrew declared: I.S.L.A.M. should stand for “I Sincerely Love All Muslims.” He visited Hamas and PLO leaders, including Yasser Arafat, giving them Bibles. Andrew travelled to 125 countries in his extraordinary life.  His wife, Corry van der Bijl, died in 2018. They had five children together.

Dorothea Olivet was born on Valentine's Day 14 February 1936. She was the eldest of 5 children: her younger sisters: Madeleine and Wilhelma, her brothers Wolf Heinrich and Theo. Her brother Wolf Heinrich died tragically at age 8. Her father was a Supreme Court judge. Her brother Theo was president of the Supreme Court. An uncle was Prime Minister of Hanover.

Dorothea Olivet grew up in a Europe at war. Even though very young at the time, she remembered the trauma of the Allied Bombing Raids, starting on 28th March 1942, raining death and destruction upon Lübeck, her home in northern Germany. The bombers came in 3 waves causing most of the destruction on Palm Sunday 29 March. The Wellington and Sterling bombers dropped over 400 tons of bombs including 25,000 incendiary devices. A number of 1.8 tonne blockbusters dropped in the first wave opened the brick and copper roofs of the buildings and the following incendiaries set them afire. This was the first firestorm bombing of any city.

In the early hours of Tuesday 9th November, Lenora fought her final battle with pain and entered eternity. It has been a long and difficult battle with cancer, but she fought it bravely.

In July 2010, during Lenora’s first bout with cancer, I asked her what she wanted. Lenora looked intensely at me and declared: “I want to live long enough to see my grandchildren.”

Lenora, the youngest daughter of Bill and Harriet Bathman, was born at dawn on 16th November 1960 in Eastbourne, Sussex, England. She was named after Bill Bathman’s mother, Lenora, who was the youngest daughter of her mother, whose name was also Lenora. Lenora’s grandmother died of cancer in her early forties.

Born in England to American missionary parents, raised in Austria, Lenora went on many missions with her father. Rev. Bill Bathman energetically ministered throughout Eastern Europe, behind the Iron Curtain.

Courageous Co-worker
Born in 1948, Rev. Jeffreys Kayanga, one of my most trusted friends and co-workers in Sudan, passed away after a short illness on 28 June 2020. Jeffreys Kayanga and I walked many hundreds of kilometres together in the war zones of Sudan. Together, Jeffreys and I conducted hundreds of services, outreaches and lectures in remote villages and towns throughout Western Equatoria, amongst the Moru, Zande, Bari, Dinka and Nuer people. We conducted leadership training programs for pastors, chaplains, teachers, evangelists, youth workers and medics. He was my translator on many hundreds of occasions. Jeffreys was a capable organiser and gifted negotiator resolving many complications and avoiding conflicts amongst different tribes and officials. When we brought Samaritan's Purse in to renovate the hospital in Lui, he became the coordinator between SP, the local church and government officials.

1 February 1929 to 18 January 2020

South Africa will probably never fully appreciate how much she owes to Professor Peter Beyerhaus, for he accompanied her through dangerous times. Our country has experienced a revolution, which has changed her from a Christian to a secular country and this turn-about was effected mainly by the World Council of Churches.

TRIBUTE to HARRIETT BATHMAN

On Saturday, 14 September 2019, Lenora’s Mother, Harriett Bathman, passed away peacefully in her sleep, at 88 years old. Bill and Harriett Bathman were married for 65 years. They served the Lord in Missions for over 6 decades in Great Britain, Eastern Europe and across the African continent. They lived in Europe for 22 of those years. For seven years, they also resided in South Africa and used Cape Town as their base of operations for continued ministry throughout Europe and Africa.

Harriett Bathman trained at the Georgia Baptist Hospital and became a Registered Nurse. She loved being an OR Nurse and thrived during medical crisis. Harriett Bathman’s most fulfilling work in her medical capacity was arranging medical equipment, as well as, teams of doctors and medical personnel to travel to Eastern Europe to perform surgeries and organising the donation and transportation of tonnes of medical equipment to hospitals in Eastern Europe and to Angola and Sudan.

A TRIBUTE to NEIL MICHAEL HURWORTH

9/7/2019

Picture
On Friday, 28 June, many friends and family, from around the world, gathered in St. Peter’s Church of England in Mowbray to salute this dedicated Disciple. A man of principle, conviction and courage, Neil Michael Hurworth was born 3 August 1933 and ended his productive earthly life at age 85, entering eternity 22 June 2019.

Mountain Climber
Uncle Neil began climbing Table Mountain during the time of General Jan Smuts whom he encountered on the slopes, in the 1940s. He and Wendy continued climbing the mountain until just a few weeks before his untimely death.

Yachtsman
Neil Hurworth was also an avid Yachtsman, who took his family on many sailing adventures. On one memorable occasion he took his son, Stephen, on an expedition to St. Helena Island, but forgot to pack the nautical maps. He remembered the Theological books, but the lack of nautical maps meant that they missed the island and got caught in a Force 10 storm. As his son, Stephen, noted, they were most fortunate to arrive back in Cape Town alive and in one piece! Stephen commented that sailing to St. Helena Island amidst the very high winds and rolling white waves, with long overhanging crests and limited visibility, is still “the most exciting episode” in his life.

"And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
