Suffering, Sacrifice and Sanctions It was surreal walking in places littered with fox holes and bomb shelters, knowing that a little over a year ago, bombs were being dropped on the very places I was travelling through. The thousands of children we shared the Gospel with in schools had endured aerial bombardments by the Sudanese government time and time again. Although horrific, it is commonplace for the Nuban people to have seen friends and family die in bombings and military attacks. By God’s grace and pressure from the US with a promise of sanctions being lifted, a ceasefire has been implemented in Darfur, Nuba and the Blue Nile. President Al-Bashir was not driven by compassion on the people he was killing, but by a financial raise in the country’s economy. This time of peace made our task of distributing Bibles to the Nuban schools possible.

Before our ministry in the Nuba Mountains began, we had opportunities to witness to people from different countries. In the airport in South Africa, we witnessed to an Ethiopian family whose little girl had some questions about God. We shared the way of Salvation with her and she said that she wanted to pray to God to change her heart. We prayed together with her in the airport. While visiting a small market place in Juba, South Sudan, we met with some Muslims from Somalia. One of them told us that he used to live in South Africa, but he moved to South Sudan because it was safer than South Africa! We also shared the way of Salvation with him. Psalm 22:27-28 Below is contained a report on our most recent mission in January and February to refugee populations from the worst holocaust of the 21st century, perpetrated by the government of Sudan on the peoples of Darfur, the Nuba Mountains and Blue Nile. The journey began in Juba, South Sudan and quickly moved North into Sudan and then Chad. “Cush will submit herself to God.” Psalm 68:31  “O my Comforter in sorrow, my heart is faint within me. Listen to the cry of my people from a land far away: ‘Is the Lord not in Zion? Is her King no longer there?’ Since my people are crushed, I am crushed; I mourn, and horror grips me.” Jeremiah 8:18-19,21
In the Scriptures, Cush (present day Sudan) is referred to 52 times making it the second most mentioned place in the whole Bible. The Word of God declares that something of world-wide significance will happen in Sudan (Isaiah 18). What could this possibly be? “If we are out of our mind, it is for the sake of God; if we are in our right mind, it is for you. For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. In Islamic Sudan, Rev. Hassan Abdelrahim Kodi and Rev. Kuwa Shemaal, activist Abdelmoneim Abdelmoula, and a Czech pastor named Petr Jasek, have been charged with conspiring against the state, espionage & spreading false information. These charges are punishable by death or life imprisonment. These people are persecuted for the Faith. Their trial started Sunday 21 August 2016. Christians in the Nuba Mountains of South Kordofan have been targeted by deadly air strikes and ground attacks. Muslim militia shouting “Allah Akbar” have opened fire at congregations gathered for worship. Nubans have fled to the Mountains & are hiding in caves. Although geographically linked to the North, Abyei, South Kordofan and Blue Nile are culturally and politically aligned with the South. These areas are predominantly non-Arab and non-Muslim. However, the Islamic regime in Khartoum wants the oil reserves in Abyei and South Kordofan and the water of the Blue Nile. Therefore it has done everything in its power to prevent their exercising the right to self-determination. To the Egyptians, Sudan was known as the land of Cush: the source of ivory, incense, ebony, gold and slaves. Sudan was subjected to numerous Egyptian trading and raiding forays until the 8th century BC. Then Cush grew to be a great power, and under their King Piankhi the Cushites conquered Egypt in 712BC. The Assyrians later invaded and seized Egypt from Cushite control in 671BC. Meroe The influences of Egypt, Greece, Rome and India are evident in the temples, tombs and pyramids built in Northern Sudan. The cursive Meroetic script of the Cushite kingdom still remains undeciphered and so most of its history remains mysterious.  The first Sudanese to be converted to Christ was the treasurer of Queen Candace in AD 37 (Acts 8:26-40).
Meroe During the 3rd Century many Egyptian Christians fled to Sudan during the persecutions of the Roman emperors Decius (AD 250) and Diocletian (AD 297). A strong Christian community was flourishing in Philae from at least AD 350. Crosses and other Christian objects have been found in the royal tombs of Meroe dating back to the 5th Century.  "Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths. Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to do it." Proverbs 3:5-6, 27
Mission Overview We have been in the field for 5 months and are now in our 6th month of ministry on this Africa Overland Mission. We have completed our ministry in South Sudan. We have travelled more than 20,000km and have had many great opportunities to minister to soldiers who protect South Sudan's northern borders, train and equip army chaplains, and conduct seminars with pastors, Evangelists, and lay leaders. We have conducted a total of 335 services, outreaches and other meetings so far, of which 150 were in South Sudan. |
