We are living in a time of crisis, chaos, crime and corruption. Yet all too many in our churches are confused, cowardly and compromising.
During a recent mission trip throughout the country I learned of many disturbing developments, farm murders, land invasions, endemic crime and corruption, the break down of services and erosion of the very foundations of civilisation. My son, Calvin, and I learned a lot about our nation’s history and heritage as we visited mission stations, schools, churches, battle sites and museums. We also learned much about the many different facets of the crisis confronting our country.

Adopted at Reclaiming Africa for Christ
Biblical Worldview Summit 42 Articles of the Essentials of a Christian Worldview Delegates from as far afield as Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, from all over South Africa, and from France and the USA participating in the Reclaiming Africa for Christ Biblical Worldview Summit at Mizpah near Cape Town, South Africa, adopted The 42 Articles of the Essentials of a Christian Worldview. This document, The Essentials of a Christian Worldview, incorporates 2,000 years of the Church’s orthodox, historically accepted theology and touches on a full range of theological and philosophical points necessary to outline the Biblical Worldview. It has been described as one of the most detailed, comprehensive, yet concise statement of the Biblical Worldview yet produced. “Who will rise up for Me against the evildoers? Who will stand up for Me against the workers of iniquity?” Psalm 94:16
When a “Sexpo” was advertised to take place in the Cape Town International Convention Centre, Africa Christian Action launched a campaign to expose and oppose this. Through a vigorous letter to the editor campaign, letters to the Mayor, many phone calls, e-mailings and radio programmes, Taryn Hodgson, Charl van Wyk and Dr. Peter Hammond alerted Christians in Cape Town and sought to mobilise opposition to this outrageous event. Many contacts of ACA reported back on replies that they had received from the Mayor’s office, and on letters to the editor published in their community newspapers. Some outraged citizens ripped down posters of the Sexpo. Other posters were defaced or had pro-family stickers placed on them. All over town bumper stickers declared: Real men don’t use porn; Pornography ruins a mind, and other slogans in Afrikaans and Xhosa. ![]() 2005 Volume 1 The new Firearm Control Act (FCA) has been described as taking away the right to self-defence, infringing on property rights, rights of privacy, and other infringements of constitutional rights. Under the Firearm Control Act a firearm owner can be presumed guilty until he proves himself innocent. The FCA provides for search and seizure without a warrant, and extraordinary penalties for otherwise law-abiding citizens who may have infringed on the excessive demands of the FCA. Is self-defence a right or a privilege? The present South African government seems to think that self-defence is a privilege for the few, not a right of all. A major battle in the World War of Worldviews is developing on the University of Stellenbosch. Stellenbosch University is recognised as one of the most important universities in the country. Most of the prime ministers and presidents of South Africa in the 20th century came from this university.
An incredible media campaign has been launched against a prominent Christian church on campus which, according to the Sunday Argus (4/11/07), is an “evil” “cult”, “brain washing”, “impressionable students.” All around we see evidence of a rising tide of godlessness. Crime and grime, litter and pollution, pornography and prostitution, gambling and drunkenness, drug abuse and urban decay, legalised abortion and child abuse, corruption in government and racial quotas in the workplace, sex education and social engineering in schools, hostility to Christianity and intolerance of Biblical standards.
“I looked for a man among them who would build up the wall and stand before Me in the gap, on behalf of the land, so I would not have to destroy it …” Ezekiel 22:30 The South African Constitution, whilst containing many positive provisions, guarantees every liberal freedom and so-called right currently being debated in the Western World. Constitutions of nations such as the United States are being reinterpreted by their judiciaries to allow for abortion and to open the debate surrounding issues such as 'sexual orientation'. But South Africa's Constitution explicitly guarantees all these 'rights'. All legislation passed since 1996 is measured against the secular humanistic values enshrined in the Constitution. South Africans have consequently seen a rising tide of immorality sweep the nation.
Almost on a daily basis Christians are faced with legislation that directly opposes our Judeo-Christian ethos. By God’s grace, Tim, Taryn, Ashley and I returned recently from a very productive time of ministry in Kwa-Zulu Natal. Tim had meetings in Pretoria and near Durban. I was invited to speak at the Christians For Truth Conference at KwaSizabantu Mission. The message was on Muslims and the Gospel and during the afternoon panel discussion the delegates expressed much interest in the subject of how to reach their Muslim neighbours for Christ. I also had many intensive discussions with missionaries involved in witnessing to Muslims and with Christians from Muslim backgrounds. I also recorded 14 radio programmes including sermons and devotionals, for Radio Kwezi.
We in South Africa are at a critical point. Both church and society are facing a multitude of serious crises that threaten not only our freedoms, but our very lives.
Farm Murders Over 3,000 white farmers, and their family members, have been murdered in the last 18 years, yet the Commandos have been dismantled. For over two and a half centuries the Commandos provided security for remote farmsteads. Now this protection is being removed. At the same time, the Firearms Control Act, which is seen in many circles as a prelude to the disarmament of many civilians, has made it very difficult for any civilian to obtain a firearm for self-defence. Every year, since 1995, Africa Christian Action has used National Women’s Day, on 9 August, as an opportunity for outreaches in the shopping centres. This year ACA mobilised outreaches in 8 shopping centres countrywide. Tens of thousands of leaflets and Gospel tracts were printed and five thousand balloons with Scriptures and pro-family messages were produced for the event. Over 100 volunteers took part in the various outreaches in Bloemfontein, Kroonstad, Port Alfred, Chatsworth and throughout Cape Town.
Ministering in the Malls The Director of Africa Christian Action, Charl van Wyk, led the outreach in Khayelitsha where the ACA literature table and display was swamped with enthusiastic shoppers eagerly clamouring for balloons, and literature. |
