Since the establishment of Sharia Law in Northern Nigeria, in 2001, over 13,750 Christians have been killed for their faith by Muslims. Churches Destroyed Just since December 2011, over 300 churches have been destroyed in Northern Nigeria. Threat 5 Million Christians in Northern Nigeria live under severe persecution. Radical Islamic groups regularly issue ultimatums to Christian communities: "You have three days to leave, or you will die!" Christians throughout Northern Nigeria are continuing to suffer a series of attacks which are often pre-planned and well coordinated. There are many attempts to force them to convert to Islam under the threat of death. Many have courageously died as Martyrs rather than deny Christ.

Nigeria
The militant Islamic Boko Haram movement has demanded that all Christians living in Northern Nigeria must leave. This comes amidst an escalation in terror attacks on churches throughout Northern Nigeria. Boko Haram has claimed responsibility for at least 45 major terrorist attacks on Christians, including assassinations and bombings. Destructive Night Attacks
In Bauchi State more than 4,000 Christians were forced to flee from their homes as Muslim Fulani Tribesman launched night attacks on 10 March. In the Tafawa Balewa area alone, 463 homes, 11 shops and 13 churches were destroyed. Truck Bombs Intercepted The next day, 11 March, security forces in Nigeria seized a truck laden with sophisticated bomb making equipment as it crossed from the Muslim state of Kaduna into the mostly Christian Plateau State. The truck was bound for Jos, a flashpoint in the North-South Islam–Christian fault line in Nigeria. Yakubu dresses in traditional Muslim Hausa robes and hat, but, he is a dedicated Christian. Yakubu was converted to Christ in Jos in 1980. Since 1991, he has been a full-time Evangelist dedicated to winning Muslims to Christ. His ministry, Bazata, means “Unexpected.” He explains that their strategy of using drama, films and Gospel music in the traditional Hausa style, is unexpected, but the primary inspiration for their ministry name is that Jesus will come at a time that no one expects.
When I asked him about the problems he encounters in his ministry, he mentioned that their Gospel van has often been stoned by angry Muslim mobs. Recently every window in their vehicle was broken by a Muslim mob offended by the Gospel music played in their mission vehicle. During the recent cartoon riots (ostensivley in protest of the obscure Danish newspaper that published some cartoons on Mohammad) at least 30 churches were destroyed and over 1,000 Christians murdered by rampaging Muslim mobs in Borno State. A bishop was burnt to death in his car, and another pastor was roasted on a stick over a fire. |
