40 Tonnes of Bibles
The Lord has heard our cry and we wanted to report that we just received word: the printing of 40,000 Bibles and 100,000 Creation to Christ 16 page picture books has begun! What's even more incredible is the container that will ship from Europe to Kenya and then into South Sudan is expected to arrive on schedule, in time for our Mission!
The story behind this shows how our God is able to do immeasurably more than we could ever ask or imagine. We will attempt to share how this all happened, but no human explanation from us is sufficient.
Bibles for Sudan
Back in April, I started investigating the most economical way to get the best quality, hard back Bible into South Sudan we could find. We had been buying at the Bible Society in South Sudan and in Uganda but what we were paying for the quality we were getting forced us to look at other options.
Sourcing Cost Effective Quality Bibles
Because of the heat, insects and rain, most soft-covered Bibles only last around 12 to 18 months in Sudan. I spoke with many publishers who had warehouses of soft-covered Bibles that were out of print that they wanted to sell. In early May, the best price I had gotten, with shipping to Africa, was going to be around $3.85 per Bible.
Major Answer to Prayer
Cindy and I began to pray. One of the publishers we spoke with on the phone connected us with someone, who knew someone else, who connected us with someone else, etc. Eventually we were put in touch with a ministry that connected us to a printing press in Europe. We began to talk with this printer about the need for well bound, hard back Bibles for Sudan. He had a 4x6 Bible he could print for $1.40 per copy if we ordered 40,000 of them. 40,000 ?!?!?!?
Transportation to the Field
40,000 Bibles was actually the number we would need to fill the sea container the Bibles would be shipped in. As crazy as it sounds, it was going to cost about the same amount of money ($10,250) to ship 10,000 Bibles as it was 40,000. But how were we going to get the money for this project? The total cost, with shipping, was going to be around $66,000. We began to pray again. In 2 Chronicles 20:12, King Jehoshaphat prays to the Lord: "We do not know what to do, but our eyes are upon YOU."
Since sending out the letter in May, we had received right around $18,155 in donations. The deadline for starting to print the Bibles was June 26 if they were going to get printed, shipped and delivered on time for the mission. On the night of June 26 I received a call from the printer. He had to order 15 - 40ft truckloads of paper by midnight. We had no clue how we were going to pay for this. We even thought about doing monthly payments for an extended period if the money did not come in. Since we trust in the fact that God's work done in God's timing never lacks God's provision, we do not solicit funds, or do any type of fundraising. Trusting in God's promises to provide, we decided it would be best to wait on the Lord for HIS provision.
Four weeks went by and then we received a random email from a Mission Agency. You are not going to believe what happened next!
Where God Guides, He Provides
Over the next 3 days, we emailed this agency back and forth 67 times. They had heard about the need for Bibles in Sudan and wanted to help. After 2 weeks of emailing back and forth, God worked it all out. With the money that was donated as a result of our initial letter plus $10,000 from Equipping the Saints, a Swiss Mission Agency agreed to pay the difference of $73,600 needed to print the 40,000 Bibles plus 50,000 of the Creation to Christ picture books.
We share all this with each of you because we want you to know that where God guides, He provides. Always.
Will you join us in praying for Christians in South Sudan and in Sudan's Nuba Mountains and for this upcoming Mission?
Yours for the fulfilment of the Great Commission,
Ben and Cindy Cohen
