Faith Under Fire in Angola

During a recent 9 000 km Bible-teaching and literature-distribution field trip, one of our missionaries managed to deliver a pick-up-truck-load of Bibles, New Testaments and Gospel booklets to over joyed believers in various Marxist (MPLA-controlled) areas of Angola. During this eventful journey our missionary suffered a severe bout of Malaria, discovered areas where not even the pastors had Bibles, and learnt first-hand of the inspiring testimonies of suffering Christians whose faith had triumphed in spite of unbelievable hardships. This is what he reports:

Frontline Fellowship field workers have received reports of Marxist atrocities in BEI province in the villages of Camakup, Katabola, Chiuka, Kambandua, Ringoma, Chimbuzoque, Kavango and Ngando. The MPLA (FAPLA) soldiers engaged in gang rapes, looting, indiscriminate murders and summary executions of “counter revolutionaries” and resistance “sympathisers” in these villages. Each of these eight villages were then burnt down, destroying the people’s homes and belongings.

Confronting Communists with the Gospel

The “peace talks” and negotiations between the Cubans, Angolans and South Africans had led to the unusual situation of having Joint Military Monitoring Commission (JMMC) posts along the South West African/Angolan border by January/February 1989.

Preaching to the Enemy
This seemed like a God-given opportunity for Frontline Fellowship to preach the Word of God to the soldiers on both sides of the border. Accordingly, our field team travelled by helicopter, vehicle and foot to reach various JMMC posts along the Southern Angolan border. Taking full advantage of the cease-fire, we walked into Angola and preached the Gospel to the Angolan troops.

Interpreters
As the SADF troops stationed at the JMMC posts were from 32 Battalion (a volunteer unit formed from Black ex-Angolan refugees who had fled Marxist rule in their home country for freedom in SWA), we could communicate through Portuguese interpreters to both sides at the same time.

Testimony of Maria Mutango

In April 1986 at LUENA ir MOXICO province, ANGOLA over 40 women met for Bible study. We were surprised by the MPLA soldiers, who came and said, God does not exist. Your God grows out of your Bibles — So eat you Bibles.” They forced us to eat our own Bibles. We were crying and some refused They were shot. So we all started running into the bush. Many were shot. I escaped and was later captured and taken to th MPLA command post at Luena, where I was imprisoned for 2 months. The Cuban and MPLA beat us and violated us daily. In July I escaped and walked many days to Jamba, and safety.

Atrocities in Angola

“The Cuban soldiers came and locked people into huts — burned them alive, others—their arms and legs were cut off. They ripped away my baby out of my arms and swinging her by the legs smashed her head against a tree. . .I was pushed into a lorry with other women. Later I was raped by ten Cubans. Those who resisted were stabbed by bayonets.”

Singing. Hundreds of enthusiastic tribes men singing and dancing to welcome our field team. Many were crippled and maimed from the war. Women who had lost legs to Soviet landmines, or whose children had been taken away — abducted — by Cuban troops and sent for military training and Marxist indoctrination in Cuba. Men whose villages had been machine-gunned and bombed (often with napalm or chemical warfare) by Soviet Migs.

Over 50 000 young Angolan children have been forcibly taken from their parents and sent to Cuba by ship or aircraft. The Cubans choose the youngsters personally and prefer to take the 7-year-olds, who are then trained for 10 years in Cuba to be Marxist- Leninist fanatics and obedient mercenaries for the Soviets. Their families never see them again.

"And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
