“Remember the prisoners as if chained with them - those who are mistreated – since you yourselves are in the body also.” Hebrews 13:3
Dear Friends and Family
Thank you for praying for us throughout 2019! We are grateful for how your prayers and support have sustained our family and made both Uganda and Sudan Missions possible and much local ministry.
New Frontline Film on the Nuba Mountains
By God's grace, Rozanne, Hunter and Christopher have completed the editing of our new film: Missions to the Nuba Mountains of Sudan. Please arrange to screen this 13-minute film at your home fellowship, school and church.
You will see footage and photos of the Bibles distributed and ministry from the Missions to the Nuba Mountains that Abrie participated in last year and this year. A few scenes were taken by Abrie with his GoPro camera.
Mobilise Prayer and Support for our Besieged Brethren Behind Enemy Lines
You can view this film on the www.FrontlineMissionSA.org website under our Vimeo Gallery. This film particularly focuses on the courageous Christians in the Nuba Mountains of Sudan, an island of Christianity in a sea of Islam. These besieged and beleaguered brethren have been fighting for Faith and freedom, in a desperate struggle for survival, against Islamic Jihad for many centuries. This film will take you across many borders, across vast distances of North Africa into the 10/40 Window of the Muslim Middle East, into one of the most remote and difficult to reach, dangerous mission fields on earth. You will see and hear from pastors, teachers, and chaplains in the Nuba Mountains and hear inspiring testimonies of what God is doing in spite of decades of vicious persecution. “How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who proclaims peace, who brings glad tidings of good things, who proclaims salvation…” Isaiah 52:7
Be Informed, Be Interceding and Be Involved
Visit www.IDOP-africa.com for articles, audios, videos, posters and other resources that can empower your family, school and congregation to be informed, interceding and involved in making a positive difference, speaking up for those who cannot speak for themselves, providing practical aid and encouragement on the ground for Christians suffering persecution for their Faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. “And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or if one member is honoured, all the members rejoice with it. Now you are the Body of Christ and members individually.” 1 Corinthians 12:26-27
Studying for the Field
In September, Abrie started studying Module One of Chronological Bible Story Telling (Creation to Christ) through New Tribes Mission (now known as Ethnos 360). Each Lesson provides an overview of essential accounts (stories) of God’s unfolding Redemptive History and highlights key points to teach from each section of God’s Narrative. As most rural people groups in Africa are a story-telling people, they can be effectively won to Christ and discipled through teaching the Bible chronologically, using the stories. At the end of each Lesson, there are Discussion Questions that must be answered. After Abrie completed these assignments, I have helped to add my own responses to his. We have enjoyed studying this material together! We have also met twice with a veteran Missionary of New Tribes Mission to discuss and clarify the central teachings of this Module. We have now completed Module One and are progressing through Module Two, which focusses on the Book of Acts. We believe these studies will be invaluable in helping Abrie to preach and teach more effectively in the field next year, especially in a rural African context.
Field Plans for 2020
In April, Abrie will be going with a team from our church, Goodwood Baptist, to Kenya, to minster to the Rindile people. This will probably be followed closely by another Mission to the Nuba Mountains of Sudan. In the second half of the year, Abrie will be conducting a week-long Great Commission Seminar in Zambia and then, Lord willing, Emma and I will be joining him in Mozambique, where we will stay with our missionary friends, the Westraads, in Xai Xai, as a base for conducting ministry in the area.
More Adventures of a Toddler
Emma is now 23 months old (she will be two on 7 January!). Because of Januaries are packed with the Biblical Worldview Summit, Great Commission Course and March for Life, we are planning a birthday party for her in February. She is busy as ever, and cannot sit still for very long. She has learnt dozens of more words since August, and almost every day copies a word that I just said and then remembers it! It is delightful listening to her learn to talk, learn people’s names and even attempt a song or two. Current song favourites at the moment are Baby Shark (it’s a catchy song, with actions, coming soon to a child near you), The Wheels on the Bus (her favourite part is when the hooter/horn goes “beep, beep, beep”) and Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. Visiting doggies, horsies, chickens, sheep and cows on our friend’s farm is one of her favourite things to do!
First Western Cape Alliance for Life Conference
I helped to organise the first ever Western Cape Alliance for Life Conference, held in Cape Town on Saturday, 5 October, for pro-life ministry leaders and other interested individuals. I gave a presentation on The Fight for Life - An Overview of the Abortion Legislation, Post-Abortion Syndrome and the Biblical Command to Fight for Life. Abrie gave a presentation on A Gospel-Centred Approach to Pro-Life Ministry. Other speakers included a Crisis Pregnancy Counsellor, and Dr Jacques De Vos, who has faced an inquisition of trials by the Health Professions Council and was barred from practicing medicine after telling a woman, considering abortion, that she would be killing a human being. The Conference successfully mobilised more people to participate in the Cape Town Life Chain, the following day, and also, I believe, in long-term involvement in pro-life ministry.
Treat-a-Tracting on Halloween in Rondebosch
On 31 October, we celebrated Reformation Day! Whilst we were celebrating the glorious rediscovery of the Gospel, many people in our neighbourhood were celebrating Halloween – a pagan festival that often involves people dressing up as witches, ghosts, vampires and other bizarre characters and even (I saw the photo on our neighbourhood WhatsApp group) as chainsaw murderers! This is one time of year when children in your neighbourhood come to you…and people will actually open their gate to strangers! We placed tracts designed specifically for Halloween (such as The Best Treat) in packets with a few sweeties in them, then went around our neighbourhood handing these out to children trick or treating. All of the children gladly accepted our sweetie packs. Next year, I plan to make a lot more, as there were much more children than I expected! We hope some of them discover the best treat of all – to know Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour!
Evangelism Seminar with Dr Krabbendam
In the first week of December, we hosted Dr Krabbendam for a four-day Evangelism Seminar here at Livingstone House. The afternoons involved daily street outreaches in our area. Dr Krabbendam is a veteran Missionary to Uganda and a Professor Emeritus of Covenant College (USA), and at 83, is an inspiration of missionary that is still going strong! Abrie joined him for his evangelism school in Uganda in January this year.
Unplanned Coming to SA’s Big Screens – 28 February 2020
By God’s grace and after much prayer and pressure, the powerful pro-life dramatic film, Unplanned, will be released at Ster Kinekor movie theatres from 28 February 2020!
After several phone calls and emails to both the International Distributors and Ster Kinekor, the positive pressure helped to mobilise Truth TV to bring Unplanned to Ster Kinekor’s big screens this coming February.
Leading up to the movie’s release, we will be helping to organize pre-viewings for Christian leaders in different cities. Such pre-viewings would be an ideal lead up to March for Life to Parliament (30 January 2020), before the anniversary of the legalization of abortion in South Africa (1 February 2020) and Sanctity Life Sunday (2 February).
